obama and mitt romney so you're in a unique place to tell me what you made of the new style romney and indeed, obama. before we get there, though, today's big news on the jobs front. whichever way you spin this from the republican side, this has to be good news not only for the president but also america, that the number's now gone down to 7.8% for the first time going below 8% in his presidency. >> well, i think that's bound to be good news but i also think you have to take it in the context that 7.8% is of course still unacceptably high but it is good news, and i think it's going to be of some help to the president. but certainly with the numbers of unemployed americans we have now, 23 million i guess it is, it's still an unacceptable situation. i think the president will concede that. >> jack welch has said today unbelievable job numbers, he tweeted. the chicago guys will do anything, can't debate so they change the numbers. is there any merit to the argument that these numbers aren't quite what they seem? >> i would be very cautious about saying that, piers, unless i had some k

below 8% for the first time since january 2009. it's good news for president obama, after his underwhelming performance in wednesday' debate. and bad news for mitt romney, and his conspiracy-minded supporters on the republican right. more on that in a moment. according to the bureau of labor statistics, unemployment dropped to 7.8% last month down .3 of a percent since august. employers added 114,000 new jobs. including 104 in the private sector and 10,000 in the public sector which had seen months of steady decline. in july's number revised to 181,000 with an additional 40,000 new jobs. president obama shared the news with a cheering crowd at a campaign appearance in fairfax virginia. >> obama: this morning we found out that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level since i office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if you're mitt romney. the g.o.p. contender talked down the jobs numbers and the economy at an a

for the obama campaign in a weak they really needed something. >> the bad news was the president's own performance in the debate. i'm told the president knew he didn't do a good job. so the question is what are they going to do to change it looking ahead to the next debate. >> they'll have to bring it. the president did not go on the attack. part of that was deliberate because they think the biggest as et he has is his likability. they think voters find him a nice guy and they don't want to risk that at any cost. but it actually cost him in that debate, because not going on the attack meant he didn't defend his own policies and now they're saying mitt romney was dishonest. well, they're saying it too late. the president needed to call him on the stage. i think you'll see him call him out more on the stage. the question is he has to calibrate it carefully because in past seasons you'll seen al gore was too passive and over correct it. >> why didn't he respond more, why didn't he talk about that 47%? >> they're not giving a good answer to that. again it was partly on the 47%, he wanted t

reactions. the unemployment rate fell below 8% for the first time since january of 2009. according to new numbers out yesterday, september's unemployment rate dipped to 7.8%, about 114,000 new jobs were added. president obama says the nation is moving forward, but there are still too many people out of work. mitt romney says the unemployment rate dropped mainly because more jobless people got discouraged and stopped looking for work. outside the political spin, people's reactions showed restrained enthusiasm. >> i think any improvement in the job numbers is obviously good. and i'm glad that it's happening and i'm glad it's happening possibly just before the election. >> if the numbers are accurate, that's always a positive thing. i don't know how you could spin it negatively but i'm sure someone will. >> it's encouraging but i don't know that it's where it's going to stay. i feel like it might go back up. i'm hopeful that it could stay down and i'm hopeful the jobs are coming back, but it just seems like it's too soon to tell that it's going to keep declining. >> you can see the jobs numb

obama took office and it's certainly positive news for his re-election hopes because no president has been re-elected with an unemployment rate above 8% since roosevelt in the 1830s. erin herself has made this point many times. >> the unemployment rate may be high, but the the absolute number is not what matters when it comes to getting re-elected. that's about to trend. every president running since world war ii has won when the rate was falling and lost when it was going up. best example, get ready. >> it's morning again in america. today, more men and women will go to work than ever before in our country's history. with interest rates at about half the record highs of 1980. >> yeah, you know what ad was for. that was ronald reagan, who won the election with a rate of 7.4%. so, the question is, can mr. obama win one like the giper or is the number still bad enough to doom his hopes? well, cue mitt romney. that's what happened today. his team is furiously pointing out how many people are underemployed. last month's household survey found 582,000 of the jobs created involved part time

to a new rasmussen poll. in ohio, president obama is leading romney by 1 percentage point n. virginia, governor romney leads 49-48%. in florida, governor romney leads by 2 percentage points. 49-47. all three are in the markin of error, but they do show gains by governor romney. it appear hes got a bounce? >> he got somewhat of a bounce. this is like a great wave, greta it's vitally important, i think we are not going to see how far the wave rolls up the beach until the polls are taken postdeigate -- post-debate, especially in ohio, if he's tied then or ahead in ohio, after that, and virginia and florida, it is a brand-new ballgame. in ohio, i think that's the critical state and the toughest one for the governor. >> greta: what is interesting about this year, compared to 8 years ago or farther back, the early voting's already started. even if he did well now, he has a chance of getting good numbers off tonight. of course, if he gets clobbered in the next debate, he may not feel the pain, if people change their minds. >> that's what is really crucial. early voting was taking place when

the president obama has no new ideas to fix the economy. his only plan for a second term as a tax increase so large it would destroy over 700,000 jobs. as friday's jobs report shows, america still desperately needs jobs. it the president's soul proposal would mean fewer jobs. we need a new direction. because we cannot afford four more years like the last four. falling incomes, rising prices, 23 million americans struggling for work. $5.50 trillion in new national debt. and now growing turmoil overseas in the middle east. president obama's policies have not worked. as vice president biden admitted, the middle-class has been buried in the last four years. another four years would does barry the middle class even more. during the 2008 debate, then senator obama assured us that he fully understood our problems and that he had the right solution. he promised to make health care more affordable. yeah president obama promise to get our spending under control by cutting the deficits in half. he also was so confident that shortly after taking office, president obama said he would fix the economy in th

: now michael there was a lot of quotes in the "new york times" to president obama and some of them make sense and some of them don't. let me give you a-30 and run it by you. hours before the debate visors said they were worried during his preparation because he was frequently interrupted by his presidential duties, and they indicated they were nervous he was under prepared. now here they're basically saying he's president. he had to be rushed to do presidenting--are you buying that. >> since aback lincoln presidents have been debating and they've been presidents. i don't buy that. if he was interrupted fine. but what people have to realize the president had an off night. whether he was unprepared, whether he was tired whether he just wasn't up to it that night. he had an off night. it is not a disaster for his presidency. it does not undo all of this. he got outflanked by an opponent and he'll be back for more. it's not that big of a deal and look at what it is. if you make excuses for what it is then it sounds conspiracial in a way. >> cenk: well, there are a lot of excuses. we'll talk

election day. there's big news on fundraising and this hour. president obama and the democrats raised $181 million in september. that is the highest election monthly total so far. meanwhile the romney camp claims it has collected more than $12 million in online donations and seeing bigger crowds on the campaign trail since wednesday's debate. but these numbers are still seizing the headlines according to conspiracy theories. jobless rate down to 7.8%, the lowest since the president took office. total employment increased 872,000. that's the biggest jump in the monthly number since june 1983. both candidates weighed in on the numbers. let's take a listen. >> we have learned that the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since i took office. more americans are entering the work force. more americans are getting jobs. but too many of our friends and neighbors are still looking for work or struggling to pay the bills. many of them since long before this crisis hit. we owe it to them to keep moving forward. we've come too far to turn back now. >> do you realize that the number of people

's not a sign that things are turning around but it's good news for president obama 7.8%. getting into the 7's is very important for him. so that's very good news for him. unfortunately it doesn't really describe the state of unemployment. and real pain in the country. 23 million americans remain unemployed or they have given up hope of being employed. >> and one big issue, of course that mitt romney talked about during the debate the other night was the deficit. the scrocketting deficit under president obama. remember, that the total federal deficit under president obama is still at $5.2 trillion. >> that's the debt that has been added, i think. the deficit right now it was also went down yesterday. the debt. and the deficit is now 1.1 trillion. that was also came out yesterday morning. >> another barometer people always look at, too. is food stamps. 2009 what did we have 33.5 million, right? and then in 2010, 40.3. last year 44.7. and look at this year already. 46.8 million. that's as of july. >> big jump. >> yeah, so are companies hiring? that could be the good sign that companies are hirin

. >> reporter: you know, president obama had a little bit of good news, the unemployment rate down to 7.8% and the campaign this morning announced he collected in september, $181 million. shy of what he did back in 2008, but, still a healthy number, and the romney campaign countered saying governor romney, less than 48 hours after the debate took in $12 million himself, and, heather they are well fu funded and it will go down to the wire. >> heather: john roberts, reporting from the apopka florida. >> gregg: a political battle is underway, the white house advises defense contractors to ignore the law. ignore law requiring them to send layoff notices to their employees. thousands of workers are at risk of losing their jobs if the government can't make a deal to avoid massive looming defense cuts, mike emmanuel is live with more on the story. >> reporter: gregg, defense contractors feel like they are caught in a game of chicken between the white house and congress, ahead of major layoffs, notices are supposed to go out, 60 days in advance, and the obama administration says companies shoul

politics. >> the latest job numbers were good news for u.s. president barack obama. for the first time since he took office, the unemployment rate fell below 8%. but his challenger, mitt romney, had a different take on the figures. he says they are actually a sign that things are getting worse. >> the unemployment rate, as you noted this year, has come down very slowly, but it has come down on the less. reason it has come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it is a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. we have made too much progress to return to the policies that led to the crisis in the first place. >> the two candidates have made radically different proposals on the way the u.s. economy should develop. it is not yet clear what effect the new employment numbers will have on the race for the white house. >> let's turn to the markets now and take a closer look at some market numbers. the

. this is great news for barack obama. the best number in over three and a half years. what it means for the economy and more importantly for americans trying to find a new job. it's too early to tell. >> of course, the president and governor romney this week went head-to-head in their first dae bait. ta >> for 18 months he's been running on this tax plan. now five months before the election he's saying his big, bold idea is never mind. >> mr. president obama, you're entitled to your own airplane and own house, but not the facts. >> i think it's safe to say the president got trounced. it was the ugliest night. >> the president is going to have to stand up and deliver. he still has a big lead in a couple of key states, but that lead will evaporate quickly. >> he has to step it up. before the debate, we had a new nbc news wall street marist poll. the president up eight points among likely voters in ohio but just two points in virginia and statistically tied in virginia. >> as the late great tim russert would say, it comes down to one state for the romney campaign -- ohio, ohio, ohio. >

decisive. in 2008, president obama would not have been able to turn florida, new mexico, colorado, nevada, would not have been able to turn those blue and win the election had it not been for the latino vote. in 2010, latinos basically saved democrats from losing the senate, and harry reid says this all the time. so latinos have already been decisive. they could be more decisive. you showed the numbers. if they came out to vote in more numbers. but essentially they will be a very critical part of deciding who the next president will be. and republicans have said that this next candidate, mitt romney, cannot win the white house if he can't get at least 40% of the latino vote. he's nowhere near that right now, randi, so this should be a big problem for republicans. >> amy, latinos say that the democrats have done a much better job in terms of reaching out to latinos and minority voters. what, if anything, do republicans need to do to turn around that perception? is it too late? >> well, interestingly, during the conventions, president obama, he outspent mitt romney 7-1, but the spending tha

hernandez, nbc bay area news. >>> decision 2012 and a seismic shake-up thanks to some economic news. for the first time since president obama took office, the nation's unemployment rate is now less than 8%. the unexpected news seemed to buoy the president on the campaign trail, who took advantage of the announcement that the american economy created 114,000 jobs last month. >> more americans entered the workforce. more people are getting jobs. >> this country has come too far to turn back now. >> conservatives, though, took to social media to accuse the obama administration of doctoring those numbers. republican nominee mitt romney did not go that far, but did say the reason for drop in the unemployment rate is because americans have just stopped looking for work. >>> the mom accused of abandoning her 10-year-old daughter inside of a local safeway store after a botched shoplifting attempt was in court today. and nbc bay area has learned investigators believe this mom did the same thing just go weeks earlier and got away with it. the prosecutor says marci ariko pulled the same stunt

that president obama's reelection campaign needs to hang its hat on, but there is new post debate polling that is not very good news. 20% of registered voters say the debate made them feel more negative towards president obama. 30% say they now have a more positive impression of mitt romney. and a representative for that poll included people who heard or read something about the debate. that same poll has the president leading among likely voters 46 to 44%. but before the debate president obama lead by 6 percentage points, so there is evidence the race is tightening. so we had to go right to the source of all polls for analysis, and we're joined by one of our favorite pollsters david merman. david thank for coming back inside "the war room." so let's just pull back for one second. how do you see the jobs numbers today shaking out with the debate performance this week? does that balance out? >> i think they are both important in different ways but over the long term i think the jobs numbers are more important. the very narrow slice of swing voters we have in this race
